Gulf Today Issue 31 Page

MOVING AT FULL THROTTLE INTO THE SECOND HALF OF THE YEAR

We are now just over half way through this current Gulf financial year and I thought it worth reviewing this period so that everyone in the Gulf family can see what progress we have made, as I firmly believe that when we have success it is something that should be shared and communicated.

India is, of course, our biggest single Gulf business and one where we have made great strides in recent years. The Gulf brand has moved up the ranks of Oil Companies in the Indian market, under the guidance of Ravi Chawla, to become a top three oil brand, an incredible achievement in what is the fifth biggest automotive market in the world. Ravi and his team never rest on their laurels and continue to strive to improve Gulf’s business – and to great effect. In the year to date, India has made excellent progress and has posted record figures for the period. Superb – an inspiration to us all.

The Marine sector is a notoriously hard market in which to operate, yet it has been one in which Gulf Oil Marine has performed extremely well in recent years, growing rapidly and achieving some excellent results. Last year Gulf Oil Marine found the going exceptionally tough, but to quote an old maxim, “when the going gets tough, the tough get going” and I am delighted to report that a revamping of their pricing structure, combined with their continued excellence of client service and their striving to succeed has led to a superb turnaround and, on this, I heartily congratulate Keith Mullin and his team.

Our volume growth in China in recent times has been truly spectacular aided, in no small part, by our partnership with Manchester United and it has now allowed our China team, headed by Arthur Liu, to make the step into fuel retailing. The opening of the first Gulf brand fuel station in China, last month (pictured), in partnership with Beibei Energy represents a landmark event for Gulf – not just in China, or in Asia, but on a global scale. Perhaps it should have come as no surprise, therefore, that as soon as the first station opened, our China team was flooded with requests from other service station owners to sign up to the Gulf brand.

Gulf’s development of its market in Argentina in recent times has also been noteworthy and has helped to contribute to a situation where our volumes are strong and, overall, our global figures are currently 8% ahead of target.

It is self-evidently a situation that bodes well for our 2018-19 year. The international economic environment, however, is more volatile at the moment than it has been for some while and the knock-on effects of possible trading restrictions and foreign exchange fluctuations could easily affect our business, so we have to ensure that we do not “take our feet off the gas pedal” and that we finish the year even stronger than we started it.

Wish you all, therefore, good health and good business.

From a distinctly autumnal London,

Frank

OFFICIAL! FIRST GULF OIL BRANDED SERVICE STATION IN CHINA DECLARED OPEN

Gulf’s first service station in China is open for business after a glittering unveiling ceremony in Guangzhou.

Alongside key executives of our retail partner, Beibei Energy, several Gulf officials, including Tobias Tasche, Vice President of Operations and Technology, and Arthur Liu, General Manager of Gulf Oil China, cut the ribbon.

This pivotal milestone for Gulf was also supported by Manchester United legend, Dwight Yorke, whose attendance illustrated the special relationship that both brands have and the commitment to further improving business in China.

The new fuel retail network is the next logical step for Gulf Oil China following the huge growth in lubricant sales over the previous two years and the rapid expansion of Gulf’s distribution network.

The site in Guangzhou is the first of what Gulf expects to be between 1,000 -1,200 Gulf-liveried stations to open in China in the next decade.

GULF PRODUCES ANOTHER INDUSTRY FIRST AS FORD GT GULF HERITAGE EDITION UNVEILED

Ford and Gulf have partnered up in a tribute to the 1968 and 1969 Le Mans race winner by producing a new Ford GT – the ’68 Gulf Heritage Edition.

The new machine represents the first time that a lubricant brand has ever partnered with a major global OEM Vehicle manufacturer, to produce a global production road car.

The car was launched to a large gathering of international media by Gulf’s Ravi Chawla and Ford’s global second in command, Joe Hinrichs (both of whom are pictured above) at the recent Monterey Historic Week. A special Gulf Today edition will follow soon, as Gulf prepares to welcome the first official Gulf Heritage Ford GT outside of the USA, which is being made available for Gulf use over the coming year.

GULF CAR CARE AND MORE ON DISPLAY AT WORLD’S BIGGEST AUTO TRADE EXPO

For the first time in over a decade, Gulf had a presence at the world’s largest Automotive Trade show Automechanika Frankfurt – the biannual expo that takes place in Frankfurt, Germany.

The opportunity came courtesy of Gulf Car care licensees, Autoland. Visitors to the show included Gulf’s Vice President – Europe Camille Nehme and he was impressed both by the display put on by Autoland – which showcased not only the car care products, but also Gulf lubricants – and by the Expo itself.

Gulf’s car care range is now extremely comprehensive and more details of the Gulf Car Care offering can be obtained from: customerservice@gulfoilsupply.com.mt and check out the Gulf Car Care manufacturing video.

GULF AND NEPAL LUBE OIL LIMITED HOST STAND AT KATHMANDU AUTOMOTIVE SHOW

Almost two-thirds of the 65,000 visitors that descended on the National Automobile Dealer Association (NADA) show over the course of six days visited Gulf’s stand, which was run in partnership with Nepal Oil Lube Limited (NLOL), the licensee of Gulf to distribute Gulf lubricants.

Held in Birkutimandap, Kathmandu, NADA is an automotive show where the world’s most renowned brands from within passenger car, motorbike, component and, of course, lubricant sectors all gather under one roof.

The Gulf stand attracted copious amounts of attention from visitors, perhaps unsurprisingly with Gulf being the number one brand in Nepal currently.

“NADA was a fruitful show; we reached our customers and other enthusiasts,” explained Pradyumna Neupane, Assistant Manager – Marketing and Brand for NLOL. “We completed our objectives of sharing product promotion and brand information, solving customer and visitor enquiries.”

MERCHANDISE

Just arrived in the Gulf office is the latest offering from Hornby – through their famous Scalextric brand. The first name in electric slot car racing is just bringing out its latest set – the Gulf Racing edition – complete with GT car and Le Mans Prototype, both in a Gulf livery.

As with all Scalextric products it is sturdy and would make a great gift for anyone, especially families with kids. Easy to assemble and guaranteed hours of fun – this set comes complete with a lap counter to stop any arguments as to who has actually won! Of course, once you have the basic track, you can add to it and get hold of new cars to drive on it – pictured here is the ROFGO Mercedes GT3 car that won the Silverstone 24 Hours earlier this year.

Also released this month, crafted by Motormax, is the impressive Gulf Racing Trailer. The 10-wheeler comprises of an open-and-close tailgate, detachable die-cast cab and a working ramp for cars.

On a slightly smaller – 1/63 – scale, Motormax has also produced a series of Gulf trucks, called Gulf Big Rigs, with five colourful different trucks and trailers , which makes an excellent set of collectables.

GULF CARS FRONT AND CENTRE
AT UK’S ROYAL CONCOURS OF ELEGANCE

The now annual Concours of Elegance that takes place at the Royal Palace of Hampton Court, South West London, under the Patronage of HRH Prince Michael of Kent, featured not only a presence from the ROFGO organisation, again this year, but also some of the most sought-after Gulf race cars of the last 50 years.

Appropriately in the 50th Anniversary year of the Le Mans win, ROFGO had their Gulf Ford GT40 team car on display. Alongside it, in the main “avenue” of the glamourous event, were a fabulous Mclaren F1 GTR long tail race car and, in Porsche’s 70th Birthday year, what else but a Gulf-Porsche 917 – which even carried off an award in the Concours’ racing car category.

GULF AND BAJAJ AUTO JOIN FORCES TO PUSH BAJAJ TRI-WHEELERS TO FILIPINO DRIVERS

Gulf and Filipino distributor, Emcor, recently hosted a ‘thanksgiving’ party to encourage tri-wheel drivers in the Philippines to switch from their usual tri-bikes to Gulf-lubricated Bajaj REs.

Held in Davao, the third most populous metropolitan area of the Philippines, drivers from the Tricycle Operators and Drivers’ Association (TODA) were invited to check out the latest Bajaj RE models and to understand the benefits of the tri-bikes, all using Gulf-manufactured Bajaj Genuine Oil.

Gulf and Bajaj Auto Limited signed a deal in October 2016 for Gulf to supply Bajaj with manufactured and blended lubricants via Bajaj’s dealer network.

At the time of signing, it was Gulf’s first OEM venture in the two-wheeler market, but, with the blossoming of the partnership it has now stretched into the three-wheel sector.
