PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE
GULF’S NEW CHENNAI FACILITY

It is my pleasure to have been part of this great organisation for last 14 years and it is like a dream come true for me, seeing Gulf’s futuristic new blending plant and global standard R&D Centre in Chennai coming to reality.

The key to this new facility is indeed the word “future”.

You will find the details of the plant’s capacity and technical specifications elsewhere in this Gulf Today. There are some truly exciting aspects of it: the blending technology is state-of-the-art and the automatic storage and retrieval system, which runs almost without any human intervention, together with the plant’s use of solar power are the way forward. But for me, it is our new Research and Development capability that will really help drive Gulf on.

This truly represents a large and vital step forward in helping Gulf compete as a global lubricant force as we were able to design it not only to cope with today’s requirements but also with our future needs firmly in mind.

The new R&D facility has no less than five different sections. Firstly, we have the Rheology Laboratory, which deals in analysing flow properties that are vitally important to all lubricants. Next comes our Performance Testing Lab – so we can ensure that products meet and exceed their target specifications, particularly with regards to oxidation & rust protection and the control of wear and deposits, which determine oil’s performance and life. Then we have our Analytical Laboratory equipped with sophisticated testing facilities which form the backbone in determining the various constituents of lubricants – the base oils, performance additives and, of course, the finished products.

Our fourth laboratory is the General Testing Lab. It is equipped to determine important physico-chemical properties of lubricants, including some performance tests (thermo-oxidation stability, turbo-charger deposits, rust protection, quenching characteristics etc.) that need to be carried out in fume cupboards to extract the smoke and fumes that emanate during testing.

Finally we have a Tribology Lab. Whereas our other labs all use bench test equipment, our Tribology lab has various test rigs with which we can determine the load bearing characteristics of industrial and metal working fluids. We are also adding test rigs for evaluation of frictional properties, as fuel economy is going to be the major driver for reducing the carbon foot print. We will also have a multi-specimen tribo-tester to simulate various metal working operations, using real life test specimens.

Our new R & D Centre – and all of its labs – are designed to recognised Global Laboratory and HSE Standards and we will use it to help design the next generation of both automotive and industrial lubricants. We are on a constant mission to help increase the fuel economy of engines – and thereby reduce the carbon footprint – and we seek to optimise our formulations to allow increased economy while not sacrificing – or even helping increase – engine/equipment durability.

Our aim, with this new facility is not only to help consolidate our position in the automotive sector, but also to increase our focus on industrial lubricants. And, of course, we look to add value to all of our stakeholders through differentiated products, as well as high quality service. We also believe that by using this facility, we can enhance our engagement with OEMs as well as academic/independent research organisations and technology partners on strategic projects.

The Gulf Customer Experience Centre, which has also opened, is a first of its kind, showcasing our brand’s history with our present product & partnership offer and our view of the future. With its virtual imaging system it is truly like something from a science fiction film!

The launch of this new facility means we are now better equipped than ever and are looking forward to meeting the future challenges. For Gulf, however, increasingly the future is now.

Wishing you good health and good business.

GULF SERVICE STATIONS NETWORK SET TO OPEN IN CHINA

Gulf is set to open its next fuel station network in China after signing up with Beibei Energy as fuel retailing licensees for the country.

Beibei is an experienced international company, boasting vast expertise in setting up and running service station networks and its principals and executives are drawn from various major fuel brands.

The first 25 service stations in China are expected to be operational by within the next 12 months, but the plans for expansion in China are ambitious and the aim is to establish 1000-1200 Gulf service stations in the medium term.

Gulf’s partnership with Manchester has been instrumental in the rapid development and growth in the Chinese market for lubricants and Manchester United’s Group Managing Director, Richard Arnold, said “With over 100 million Manchester United followers in China, Gulf’s partnership with the club is stronger than ever and we look forward to expanding it further through these exciting new service stations.”

FIRST GULF SERVICE STATION OPENS IN ARGENTINA

It is a busy period for the opening of the Gulf service stations, with the first stations due to open in various new fuel retail markets. Gulf Oil Argentina S.A (GOA) has just launched its first fuel station – pictured – which is located in the city of Villa Maria, in the province of Cordoba, in the centre of the country, some 350 kilometres North West of Buenos Aires.

Gulf’s move into fuel retail in the South American country made headlines in Argentina’s motoring press as can be seen.

GOA also intends to develop a Gulf fuel network in Paraguay and plans are well underway for the opening of the first Gulf station in the country. The aim is to have two South American service station networks open in the near future, with 50 stations targeted in Argentina and 100 further stations targeted in Paraguay.

NEW GULF 7 LITRE PACKS BREAK COVER

In response to changing motoring trends and, in particular, the rapid growth of the SUV vehicle population – especially in South East Asia – which have larger oil sumps, Gulf is launching 7 litre packs.

For the end customer the new packs eliminate the need to either buy multiple small packs or too much oil, which is obviously not cost effective.

The new packs are available in 3 colours: gold, silver, blue – per current global product tiering – and, of course, they follow global packaging and label standards

The first packs have already been produced and will be filled imminently.

GULF OFFICIAL MERCHANDISE

Announced in March, TAG-Heuer’s new long-term deal instantly heralded the debut of the latest Gulf edition of the famous Monaco watch. It was appropriate, therefore, that TAG Presented ROFGO’s Roald Goethe and Stuart Hall – who drove at this year’s Monaco Historic GP – with examples of the new watch.

Sales of the new model have gone extremely well and it looks like selling out very shortly. If any Gulf businesses are still thinking of taking advantage of the attractive partners’ rate on a Gulf Monaco, time is running short….. so it is advised to contact Paul Menezes in the very near future: paul.menezes.wr@gulfoil.co.in

Scalextric have various new Gulf models in the pipeline for 2018 and the latest is this Team LMP Gulf model. The new car, which is really aimed at relative beginners in slot car racing, is super-tough to rebound from all of the likely crashes that people suffer when first racing and is slightly reminiscent of the Aston Martin DBR 1-2, that competed in Endurance Racing for Gulf from 2009-2011. With its vivid colour scheme, it would certainly look excellent on any Scalextric set.

Further news in the miniature car world for Gulf are the five initial 1/64 scale Gulf models from Greenlight Collectibles that have been specially commissioned for Gulf businesses to use in marketing initiatives, whether they be in fuel or lubricant promotions. The range comprises a Gulf-liveried Chevrolet Camaro, Nissan GTR, Ford Mustang, Audi R8 and Chevrolet Corvette. All come in their bespoke “Celebrate Your Passion” packaging and major orders have already been taken from Gulf businesses across the globe. Rachit.Kapoor@gulfoilltd.com

Gulf sunglasses from TeneLenti caused a wave of interest last year and this year the company has produced a 50th anniversary commemoration pair of sunglasses. The latest models have, like their predecessors, extremely high-quality frames and lenses, but these have the added cachet of being limited runs carrying the official logo on the top corner of the left hand lens itself. Extremely cool.

The latest catalogue of Gulf furniture has also recently been announced and features many cleverly designed pieces, with some of the star attractions again being Gulf Oil Drum based. Our personal favourites, the Oil Drum Sofa and petrol pump cabinet. More details from: Oliver Czank – czanko@gulf.hu

Grand Prix Originals are the one of the longest serving Gulf merchandise licensees and they have recently launched a 50th Anniversary of the Ford GT40 Victory range of clothing, which includes T-shirts and dress shirts, caps, bags and an excellent scarf. CHENNAI SUPER KINGS RULE THE IPL!

Congratulations to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on becoming 2018 Indian Premier League (IPL) Champions.

Gulf’s Cricketing Partners, led by Gulf Brand Ambassador MH Dhoni, swept to victory in the final over against Sun Risers Hyderabad.

Set 178 to win, an incredible 117 not out from opening batsman, Shane Watson – the highest innings ever in an IPL Final – was the decisive factor in the match. CSK won by 8 wickets, with an over and a half to spare.

It has been a truly exciting season for CSK – often pulling out victory from seemingly impossible situations – with the team, as a whole, performing superbly.

Once again, Gulf Oil Lubricants India Ltd, has run some excellent marketing initiatives including the “who is Mr Pride” #IdhuNammaPride social media campaign, which trended as India’s number one post.

ORIGINAL GULF TEAM MANAGER TO JOIN 50TH ANNIVERSARY LE MANS CELEBRATIONS

John Horsman who was team manager for the victorious Gulf JW Team that took outright victory at the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1968 – pictured here in the pits in 1968 (top right with clipboard) – is to be guest of honour for Gulf’s celebrations of the 50th anniversary in June, at the famous Hotel de France, in la Chartre-sur-le-Loir, which was home to the Gulf team during its victorious years at Le Mans.

Horsman oversaw the day to day racing activities of the Gulf cars and was also widely credited with reworking the legendary Porsche 917 into a race and championship winning car, when Gulf switched from Ford to Porsche.

He ran the Gulf Research Racing factory in Slough that developed the successful Mirage cars, when Gulf effectively became a race car constructor. This culminated with the Le Mans winning Gulf GR8-Ford that took victory at Le Mans in 1975.

When the Gulf Research Racing set up was bought and moved to America, John Horsman moved with the company and has remained there ever since. In June he is flying over from Arizona, and he will be reunited with other members of the victorious 1968 team over this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours weekend.
